Measurement of Cardiac Output using Single-breath Method

Abstract
Cardiac output can be measured by several techniques- invasive (ex, thermodilution, indicator dye dilution, standard Fick¢¥s techniques) and noninvasive(ex, single breath method, re breathing method). Among these techniques, single breath method has several advantages; no timing is required, no complex breathing maneuvers have to be performed, examinations can be performed during short interval, patient¢¥s comfort due to noninvasive technique etc.
This study was performed to examine the cardiac output of adult male and female at rest and to evaluate the reliability of this single breath method.
The results were as follows:
1) Mean values of oxygen consumption in male and female adult at rest were 266.34¡¾21.53 ml/min. and 246.44¡¾11.99 ml/min. respectively.
2) Mean values of cardiac output in male and female adult at rest were 3.53¡¾0.59 l/min. and 3.48 0.531/min. respectively.
